That awkward moment when you are crowned Emperor of a dynasty that has just fallen
On June 14, 1276, a young man by the name of Zhao Shi was crowned Emperor Duanzong of the Song Dynasty. Not only was Duanzong only eight years old at the time he was crowned, but he was crowned Emperor because his brother had just been captured by the Mongol invaders who had just also captured the capital of the Song Dynasty.
Although the Song Dynasty did not officially fall until 1279, it was all but done for after the capital of Lin’an was captured in 1276. Thus an eight year old boy was essentially crowned Emperor of a dynasty that had already been conquered.
Luckily, he did not have to live with the infamy of being the last “official” Emperor of the dynasty. That honor fell to his brother, Zhao Bing, Emperor Bing of Song.
Unfortunately, he still good royally screwed.
